The Israeli Liga Leumit (Hebrew: הליגה הלאומית, HaLiga HaLeumit, lit. 'National League') is the second division of the professional Israeli association football (soccer) league system. This second-tier league is placed right below the Israeli Premier League.

History

Liga Leumit came into existence at the start of the 1955–56 season, replacing Liga Alef as the top division in Israeli football. However, it was usurped as the top flight in the 1999–2000 season, when it was replaced by the Premier League. Since then it has operated as the second tier in the Israeli football league system.

Liga Leumit din Israel este a doua divizie de fotbal din țară. Ea este alcătuită din 16 echipe care concurează într-un sistem de promovare și retrogradare cu Ligat Ha'Al, prima divizie a Israelului. Sezonul durează din august până în mai, fiecare echipă jucând de două ori împotriva fiecărei alte echipe. Primele două echipe din clasament promovează în Ligat Ha'Al, iar ultimele două echipe retrogradează în Liga Alef, a treia divizie din Israel.

Liga Leumit a fost fondată în 1951 și de atunci a devenit o parte importantă a sistemului de fotbal israelian. A fost un teren de încercare pentru mulți jucători care au continuat să joace pentru echipa națională a Israelului. Liga Leumit găzduiește, de asemenea, o serie de echipe legendare, cum ar fi Hapoel Tel Aviv, Maccabi Haifa și Beitar Jerusalem.

Fotbalul din Israel este foarte popular, iar Liga Leumit are o bază mare de fani. Meciurile sunt deseori disputate în fața unor tribune pline, iar atmosfera este electrică.
